Technology Used To Encourage Activity Amongst Children
Everybody Online – Caithness has been working with the local councils Active Schools Co-ordinator to build a bridge between technology and health.
Shona Munro, project officer for the Everybody Online project and Kenny Russell, Active Schools Co-ordinator have been working together to gain funding for Wii consoles and Wii Fit games. Having successfully attracted funding to purchase 3 consoles with games and extra equipment they are now rolling out the project amongst local primary schools.
Two of the Wii Fits will remain within 2 of the more rural schools in West Caithness with the third being used by the Active Schools Co-ordinator to target specific groups amongst the primary school age range. Kenny Russell is pleased with the new technical addition to his sports equipment:
‘The Wii Fit programme is great, it is encouraging children of all ages and abilities to try something new and is getting them active in a very fun way.’
The programme has been running in the schools for 3 weeks now and the children have really enjoyed having access to the technology. The children have all taken part in the Wii Fit programme and the console as introduce new techniques into their activity regime.
Project Officer, Shona Munro is happy with the new scheme:
‘It has been great working with Active Schools, combing technology and sport is a new experience for me and it’s fantastic that the Everybody Online could get involved. Hopefully the programme will continue to grow and more and more children will receive the benefits from it’.
