EverybodyOnline at Toxteth Town Hall Heritage Day

EverybodyOnline at Toxteth Town Hall Heritage Day

EverybodyOnline teamed up with Toxteth Town hall when it opened its historic doors to members of the public to explore the routes of their Toxteth heritage.

Visitors had the opportunity, not only to witness first hand the refurbishment and restoration of the historical Town Hall but, to celebrate the rich tapestry of Liverpool 8 with a range of informative activities provided by local community groups and businesses.

The Archaeological Society’s digital mapping department gave an educational talk that allowed participants to take a fascinating trip down memory lane where they discovered fascinating facts about the streets they grew up in. They were then invited to have a go themselves at investigating old Toxteth as they joined EverybodyOnline to seek historic information on the internet.

Other organisations included Friends of the Florrie (the Florence institute), a local group who are trying to restore the historic Florrie building for public use. Representatives spoke passionately of the Florrie’s struggle for survival and encouraged local people to check out various websites for background information, with many signing up to support the cause.

The afternoon brought two popular guest speakers: Frank Carlyle, a renowned Liverpudlian historian, who talked about local heroes in the fields of medicine and architecture and local crime historian Vincent Burke, who told chilling tales of Liverpool Murders’ which inspired people to investigate further on the internet.

EverybodyOnline project officer, Sadie Adshead said:

“It has truly been an informative day for everyone who’s turned out, 62 people went on online for the first time and all those who wished to create an email address made time to do so.”
