The Sailor, the Sea and the Internet

Summary

Retired Naval Officer Horatio came along to EverybodyOnline @ Askalot because he’d heard about the internet and thought he should come along and find out what it was all about. Since his experience with EverybodyOnline he now logs on regularly to check out the weather, tide times and a wealth of other useful information to assist him in sailing safely.

What Happened?

At first Horatio wasn’t too sure what he would use the internet for as he had never used a computer before. Initially project officer Christine Alexander introduced Horatio to how a computer works and use of the keyboard and printer. Once he felt confident in these areas, Christine introduced him to the internet and they did some gentle surfing together. During one of his regular internet taster sessions with Christine Horatio mentioned he was still a keen sailor and kept a boat moored on the south coast. Christine showed him how the internet could actively help with his sailing activities. Together they looked at several websites which showed coastal forecasts, sea temperatures and all kinds of interesting information relating to sailing.

Now Horatio regularly uses the internet to check the tide times and the weather where his boat is moored before heading out to sea.

“The internet is incredible. Before I set sail I can access information on the weather and tide times easily and quickly”.
